Options for K-7 Teachers

Reporting – Communicating Student Learning K to 7

SD 79 Options

Elementary teachers will have the choice to communicate student learning through one of the following options:

  • Option 1 – Form B report cards and Portfolios
  • Option 2 – Form A report cards

Option 1 – Form B and Portfolios

  • Form B follows the Interim Student Reporting Guidelines (Schedule 2);
  • Reporting is ongoing throughout the year;
  • Communications with parents/guardians shall be made at least five times during the year;
  • Letter grades are optional, and must be provided if requested by a parent;
  • Twice a year, teachers will provide parents/guardians with a paper based Summary of Learning; and
  • All areas of learning need to be reported on, as outlined in the Student Progress Report Order and the Student Reporting Policy.

Option 2 – Form A

  • Form A follows the standard Student Reporting Policy (revised)(Schedule 1);
  • It maintains the requirement to provide a minimum of three scheduled formal reports during the school year and two other forms of communication to parents/guardians;
  • Letter grades are required; and
  • All areas of learning need to be reported on, as outlined in the Student Progress Report Order and the Student Reporting Policy.

The option of not using letter grades in Grades 4 to 7 is a teacher choice, but something the district is supporting, as we want to keep the emphasis on the learning rather than letter grades. Teachers choosing this option will need to work with their principals and together help students and parents/guardians understand the reasons for moving to more effective ways of communicating learning.

As per the Ministry’s Interim Reporting Order, parents have the option of receiving letter grades should they request them.
