Cowichan Secondary Student Brynna Coogan Selected as 2023 Loran Scholar

Cowichan Valley, BC – The Cowichan Valley School District is thrilled to share that Brynna Coogan from Cowichan Secondary School has been named a 2023 Loran Scholar.

This year, the Loran Scholars Foundation selected 36 exceptional high-potential youth from a pool of nearly 4,800 applicants who demonstrated their drive to step up in the face of challenges and make positive change in their communities across the country. As graduating high school and Cégep students, the pursuits and accomplishments of the newest recipients of the Loran Award are exemplary, but it is their values-driven approach to leading and dedication to uplifting their communities that distinguish them as Loran Scholars.

Brynna is the founder and leader of her school’s first environmental club. She coaches a community swim team and her high school’s aquatics program. She is the captain of the senior girls’ volleyball team. She is also an active member of her school’s leadership class as well as a section leader in the concert band.

The Loran Scholars Foundation is committed to identifying and supporting young people to realize their full potential. To find these young people, the Foundation administers the most thorough scholarship selection process in the country. As such, selection supersedes grades and is based on strength of character, a deep commitment to service, evidence of courage, compassion, and an entrepreneurial spirit.

“We are incredibly proud of Brynna for being selected as a Loran Scholar. Through this opportunity, the impact we have felt in our district through Brynna’s work can be shared across the country,” said Cathy Schmidt, Chair of the Board of Education for the Cowichan Valley School District.

The only award of its kind in the country, the Loran Award is a four-year leadership enrichment program consisting of summer work experiences, mentorship, scholar gatherings, an annual living stipend, and a tuition waiver at one of 25 university partners. Loran Scholars are provided with the opportunity to build critical skills and capacity for leadership, to expand horizons by taking on new challenges and exploring diverse experiences, and to join a community of purpose-driven peers who are committed to leaving the world better than they found it.
