VIU Trades & Health Programs

 

This unique opportunity enables dual credit courses to be offered to qualified Grade 11 & 12 students. Students successfully completing these courses receive elective credits towards their Dogwood Diploma as well as university credits which are also accepted at other BC universities including VIU.

This offering enables students to:

  • get a head start on their post-secondary studies while remaining within the secondary school support system.
  • earn dual (double) credits for each course.
  • gain access to university and college.

Applied Business Technology 
This program provides in-depth training in the skills required by today’s office workers. The program offers certificates in the following specialty areas of study: Administrative Assistant, Accounting Assistant, and Legal Administrative Assistant. Current computer software applications and accurate keyboarding techniques are emphasized, in addition to knowledge in areas such as business English, math and calculators, office procedures, and human relations. Specialty courses relevant to each certificate are also included. The certificate includes a two-week work experience where students have the opportunity to practice their skills working with a local business. Graduates demonstrate a multitude of transferable skills that support them in pursuing their education and employment goals.

Carpentry
This Entry-Level Trades Training (ELTT) program covers the basic carpentry skills required in preparation for employment as a carpenter apprentice in the building industry.

Hairdressing
This apprenticeship program covers all the theory required to become a BC certified hairdresser. Client services are offered to enhance practical skills in the Salon. A work based training component is included.

Health Care Assistant
This program provides the knowledge and skills to work with and support the needs of older adults in a variety of healthcare settings. Academic and practical course work will be delivered on the caregiver’s roles and responsibilities.

Heating, Ventilation & Air-Conditioning/Refrigeration
This program prepares individuals for entry into the heating (gas and oil), air-conditioning, and refrigeration industry service sector. The program provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of installing, servicing, and troubleshooting all aspects of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning/ refrigeration (HVAC/R) equipment, as well as customer relations.

Professional Cook Level 1
Learn through extensive hand-on instruction, the theory of cooking, cooking methods and techniques of food preparation such as knife skills, safety, diet and nutrition, stocks, soups and sauces, meat, poultry and seafood cookery, grilling, roasting, braising, etc. This certificate qualifies students to work in industry.

Introduction to Trades Core Program
This career program is designed to introduce a wide array of trade awareness activities. Module will include the following trade areas: carpentry, documentation and plan reading, electrical, plumbing, painting, drywall, sheet metal and tile setting. The program will focus on the development of work readiness skills essential to the workplace.
