Bench Elementary Celebrating 150-years and You’re Invited

This year marks the Bench 150 Celebration, and we are looking forward to the future. Bench Elementary is one of the oldest schools on Vancouver Island and has had a significant contribution to the historic community of Cowichan Bay past and present and we’re inviting you to be part of the celebrations!

On June 15th Bench School is hosting an open house celebration for all students and staff who have been part of the school community over the years. Come and revisit the school and relive memories of the past. The open house will take place from 5-8 PM and there will be a brief ceremony at 6:00 in front of the school.

Bench Staff have been fortunate enough to have had cooperation and assistance from the Cowichan Historical Society who have shared many of their relevant artifacts with us. At this time, Bench is collecting old photos and stories to add to our shared history which will be on display.  Please email any information you would be willing to share to bench150@sd79.bc.ca. Students have also been working on displays and art installations to commemorate the rich history of the school.

To mark this historic milestone, we are raising funds to build the Bench 150 Legacy Trail. This wonderful 1 kilometre accessible trail around the perimeter of the grounds will be used by students and the community for years to come. Be a part of this legacy, members of the community are invited to donate today at https://sd79.bc.ca/donate-now/ or in person at the celebration. Please ensure you title your donation ‘Bench Legacy Trail’ so funds can be properly allocated. Tax receipts for donations over twenty dollars can be provided. Please specify on the donation that it is for the Bench Legacy Trail. Already, on what will be the trail, students have been tracking their exercise and building goals such as walking together to various locations on the Island and eventually around Canada.

We look forward to seeing you there!
