As a student, you have the ability to directly engage with the Cowichan Valley School District through the District Student Advisory Committee.

The District Student Advisory Committee of the Cowichan Valley School District is the voice of our student body. It offers a mechanism for the exchange of information between students and board members, allowing for student input into decisions affecting both intra-curricular and extra-curricular school experiences.

DSAC promotes positive inter-school relations and representation from the District’s large and diverse geographical area. DSAC also provides students an opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills by reporting out at the meetings and then back at their schools.

Applying for scholarships can be a lot of work – but it’s worth it! It is each student’s responsibility to research the kinds of scholarships he or she may be eligible for. Your school counsellor is always there to guide you.

Kids Help Phone has all sorts of help about bullying, including cyber bullying.

You can go to kidshelpphone.ca, or call them at 1-800-668-6868 to talk, any time. You do not have to give your name or address or phone number. They have parts of the website just for kids, and another just for teens.

Most of these are accessible from any Interconnection, but if a site requires a username and password, please contact your school librarian. Access from school computers should be automatic. Student Speaking Competition

The Rotary Club of Duncan has hosted the annual Hector McIntosh Student Speaking Competition since 1982. The competition is named for Hector McIntosh, a teacher from Shawnigan Lake Private School, who had the vision for the competition and provided the funding through his will for the initial years that the competition was run.

The objective of the program is to develop the art of public speaking for elementary, junior, and senior secondary students by promoting inter-school competitions.

Effective May 2010 age categories and prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd:

1. Elementary including Grade 6: $140, $90, $70
2. Grade 7 & 8: $250, $165, $125
3. Grade 9 & 10: $420, $275, $210
4. Grade 11 & 12: $1,250, $875, $500

Students are encouraged to contact their school office for further information and to inquire about participating in the competition.
