The Cowichan Valley School District, in partnership with a number of organization, offers District Academies to students both within, and beyond, the Cowichan Valley. The various District Academies offer students exceptional choice and the ability to focus their learning in specific areas of interest led by specialists in that field.

Cowichan students take home top spots at Skills Canada!
The Skills Canada BC’s 2018 Provincial Competition took place on April 18, 2018 at the Tradex, in Abbotsford. More than 600 competitors in 58 competition areas competed in fields as diverse as aerospace, automotive, 3D Animation, baking, welding, robotics — and much more!
The Cowichan Valley School District had nine students representing us at this year’s Provincials, after some amazing wins at the regional competition in Nanaimo in March. We are very proud of all of our competitors for their accomplishments.
Two of our students, Taylor Walters and Lawson Wallace are heading off to the Skills Canada Nationals in Edmonton on June 4-5, 2018.
Here are some of the highlights from the competition, including our winners.
Frances Kelsey Secondary student Taylor Walters won GOLD in Public Speaking, in the secondary competition. Taylor is heading to Nationals!
VIU/SD 79 Dual Credit students Lawson Wallace (left) and Bristol Hillis (right) won gold and silver in refrigeration, at the post secondary level. Lawson is heading to Nationals! Awesome work beating second and third year students!
Alex Madgin from Cowichan Secondary placed 4th in electronics…a grade 10 student competing against grade 12’s. Look out next year!
Quamichan’s Sophia O’Connor placed 5th in gravity cars!
Cowichan Secondary’s Trinity Chow placed in the top 6 in the photography competition!
Cowichan Distributed Learning’s Dana Soikie placed 6th in the Spaghetti Bridge competition!
The youngest competitors (Grade 6) Jackson Martin and Bennett Stone from Bench Elementary placed in the top 8 in the Sumo Robot Competition!
