Indigenous Education Graduation Celebration

Last week the Indigenous Education Department of the district organized and hosted our Indigenous Education Graduation celebration. This ceremony is different than the usual cap and gown ceremony and honours the shared and individual histories of our Indigenous students.

For this ceremony, students arrived via canoe on the banks of Tl’ulpalus (commonly known as Cowichan Bay) where they were met by family and friends and the Tzinquaw Dancers who sang them to the stage. The students were then honoured with two dances by the dancers before enjoying a great meal with their guests.

After a hearty meal, the students were presented with their paddle necklaces by their principals as a final recognition of the years of work to come to this night.

A beautiful ceremony honouring our students. Huy tseep q’u (Thank you all)
